"The solution is on the periphery." — Dan Pink

Description

The Why of Scrum is a half-day online workshop to explore the principles and values of Scrum. The workshop was originally designed for those who already have Scrum experience and are looking to deepen their understanding, but it also works as a valuable introduction for those new to Scrum. The blending of experienced and novice minds contributes greatly to the learning.

Philosophy

This workshop is centered on the belief that Scrum is a radically different way of working, and not some kind of superficial reframe of work-as-usual. Focusing on the principles beneath the framework and process, reaching into your own personal value system to draw out meaning, this workshop will have you challenge how you show up for work, and what you believe it means to "do Agile".

The learning emerges from the shared experience of all in the session. This is not expert-led—indeed the idea of expertise in Agile is itself challenged. Participants are invited to bring their own experience to bear on the learning, and to express their expectations, desires and frustrations. Ultimately, what you learn here will emerge from your heart, and take form in the practice you apply back in the workplace.

Content

The Scrum framework will be revisited, not as a What but as a Why. Relationships between the Scrum roles will be revealed, showing the vitality of "individuals and interactions over processes and tools". The guiding principles of purpose, alignment, focus, release and rhythm will be explored to understand how these concepts must underpin any effective Scrum implementation.

Facilitators

This online workshop is co-facilitated by Tobias Mayer and Charles-Louis de Maere. Each facilitator brings different styles and skills to the mix, opening up exploration through brief presentation, group dialog, drawing and writing.

Participant Responses

"The #WhyofScrum was a very enlightening experience. Jargon free and full of beautiful metaphors with mind opening questions. Absolutely loved it. I think we needed more time as Tobias had so much to give. Thank you."Gawain Lee-Son, Agile Coach

"I've just finished the workshop "The Why of Scrum" with Tobias Mayer. I feel proud of finally being able to attend one of Tobias' workshops and I have to say I feel inspired! The simplicity in the way he expresses the concepts is for sure the result of many years of experience and many hours of deep reflection. I feel honoured for receiving that gift. My takeaway: Scrum is more natural than we think, it follows the human process of Inspect and adapt, and so it requires a more humanistic mindset and orgs: let go of ego and power, and have a dialogue between equals."María Belén Senra, Agile Coach
