In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
— Genesis 1:1-3
Beginnings. They happen all the time. A beginning is a moment we wake up to ourselves, to another, to a new idea—even just a very slightly different idea, a twist that challenges an embedded belief perhaps, undermines an assumption, or offers a new insight. If we are watchful we'll notice those moments, and we'll wake up new. Let there be light: and there was light.
And there was distinction. God created the heaven and the earth. Separate, discrete parts of a whole. Without distinctions there is no beginning, there is only sameness, ongoingness. We must discern and differentiate to change. For each of our beginnings we start by recognising the distinctions: this is now different to that. God has moved within us, upon us, and we wake up new.
