Kairos, god of the fleeting moment, watercolour by Tobias Mayer, 2022
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
— James 5:7
This brings us back to stillness, as modelled by Elijah many centuries before.1 The miracle will happen in God's time, not our own. Our earthly realm, or day to day schedule may be ruled by chronos, but the kingdom of God is more aligned with kairos, 'the right, critical, or opportune moment'. Such moments cannot be hurried nor willed into happening. As the farmer cannot will his crops to grow by a certain date, to suit his market, so we cannot predict the date of revelation, or know when the next miracle will occur. It will occur. James asks us to be patient, to wait, knowing change is on its way, and to savour just exactly that.
