Rivelin Valley, Sheffield

The Rivelin is a fast-flowing river fed by a constant release of water from the nearby moorland peat. Its flow was exploited for centuries as a power source, driving the water wheels of up to twenty industries along its course. Today we walk there, tripping over millstones and twisted iron, soaking up Sheffield's industrial past, with the essence of socialism still lingering in the musky forest air.
